Offerings

The standard offerings to any Netjer also apply to Sobek, in the form of food, beverages, and incense. It is important to note that it is traditional for you to consume the offerings after the gods have taken their share.

  • cool, clear water
  • wine (I believe Sobek prefers red.)
  • beer (dark)
  • milk
  • bread
  • red meat
  • fish
  • figs
  • dates
  • honey
  • onions
  • grains
  • grapes
  • fruits and vegetables

Sobek is called the “Lord of Myrrh” and it is often written that he was the recipient of myrrh, so I generally offer him myrrh incense, although frankincense is also enjoyed. It is my feeling that resins are vastly preferred.

Sobek also greatly enjoys flowers, particularly pink and purple ones.

It is my strong sense that Sobek enjoys dark rum.

On the walls of the temple of Medinet Habu, Sobek is shown receiving offerings of beer, bread, ox, fowl, alabaster, linen, and ‘every good and pure thing on which the god lives’.

We are informed the sacred crocodile kept in his temples was fed roasted meat and wine mixed with honey.

As “Lord of the Lake”, hunting expeditions around the waterways were recorded to have burned propitiatory offerings to Sobek, under whose domain the lush marshlands, rich with life, fell.

Statues of Sobek have been found dedicated to him in temples during the 12th and 13th Dynasties.

A dagger was dedicated to Sobek by King Apepi (15th Dynasty).
